Gutters fill quietly. A summer of leaf drop, dust and shingle grit sits in the trough until the first storm turns it into a dam. Cleaning is the cheapest part of our gutter work in Los Angeles, and it often tells you whether you need anything else.
If a cleaning reveals sagging or leaking runs, gutter repair is next. If the gutters are beyond saving, see gutter installation.
Gutter cleaning in Los Angeles: what each visit includes
A visit has a set order, so nothing gets skipped:
- Look from the ground. We note overflow stains, trees overhead and the roof edge.
- Clear the trough by hand. Debris comes out into a bucket or bag, not into your yard.
- Clear the outlets. We remove whatever blocks each downspout opening.
- Flush the run. Water carries away the last grit and shows whether the gutter drains.
- Check the downspouts. We confirm water exits cleanly and lands away from the wall.
- Report what we saw. You get a plain account of leaks, sags, damaged hangers and roof edge wear.

When to schedule fall gutter cleaning and after Santa Ana winds
Fall, just before the rains, is the main window. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals put yearly rain near 14 inches downtown, falling mostly from December through March. That makes the weeks before December the time to have the troughs empty. Searchers and booking sites describe demand peaking from September through December, so booking in early fall beats waiting for the first storm warning. Mild winters also keep birds and rodents nesting in debris all year.
Wind is the second trigger. A strong Santa Ana event can strip leaves, twigs and eucalyptus bark off trees and pack them into the gutter in a day. See our post on the Santa Ana wind roof damage risk, and our gutter cleaning schedule for Southern California for a calendar by tree type.

Clogged gutter signs to watch for
You do not have to climb up to know. These point to a gutter that is blocked, not broken:
- Water spilling over the front edge in moderate rain
- Streaks on the stucco or a wet line below the gutter
- Plants or seedlings sprouting along the roof edge
- Dark granules sitting at the downspout opening
- A gutter that looks bowed under weight
- Birds or rodents nesting in the debris
If the gutter overflows even when it is clear, look at the pitch and downspouts instead. That is a repair question, and our post on why gutters overflow explains how to tell.
Cleaning, flushing or guards: which fits your house?
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hand cleaning and flush | Most homes, once or twice a year | Needs repeating |
| Cleaning plus a repair | Gutters that leak or sag | Costs more up front |
| Cleaning plus gutter guards | Houses under heavy trees | Guards still need a rinse now and then |
| Roof cleaning with gutters | Moss or grime on the roof as well | A larger job; see roof cleaning |
Guards do not remove the need for a look. They stretch the time between cleanings.

What gutter cleaning does not cover
Cleaning is not repair. If we find a split seam or a loose hanger, we tell you and quote that separately. We also do not fix rot in the fascia or replace gutters as part of a cleaning visit.
Some roofs limit what we can do. Steep, wet or fragile tile roofs may be unsafe to stand on, and we stay at the edge. Debris behind the first row of tile may need tile lifted. Underground drains beyond the downspout are outside a gutter cleaning, though we will tell you if water seems to back up there.
What affects the cost of gutter cleaning?
Cost follows the length of gutter, the height of the house and how much is in the trough. A single-story ranch with light debris is the simple case. Two stories, tile, long runs, heavy leaf load and many downspouts add time. A first cleaning after years of neglect takes longer than a yearly one.
Price comes in writing after we know the house. Ask any company what the price includes, such as a flush, a bag-out of debris and a report on what was found.
Gutter debris, fire season and local rules
Dry leaves in gutters are fuel at the roof edge in a wildfire. State guidance on defensible space includes keeping roofs and gutters clear of debris, so a clean gutter before fire season is a sound habit. In La Cañada Flintridge, the 2009 Station Fire burned the mountains directly above the city, which is why debris near homes there gets attention.
Gutter cleaning on its own is routine upkeep, not usually a permit matter. Ladder and roof work is subject to safety rules, and some HOAs set access rules. Hidden Hills is a gated city where ranch-style estates answer to homeowner association design rules. Culver City mixes 1920s to 1940s bungalows with low-slope buildings, so gutter types vary from street to street.

Hillside homes such as those in View Park-Windsor Hills have mid-century houses on view lots, where water leaves the gutter and keeps going downhill. We look at where the downspout ends as well as the trough above it. For ongoing care, our roof maintenance page covers regular visits.
Gutter Cleaning: common questions
How often should gutters be cleaned in Los Angeles?
Most homes do well with a cleaning each fall before the rains, and a second one in spring if trees drop heavily. Houses under oaks, pines or eucalyptus may need more. After Santa Ana winds strip leaves from trees, a quick check is worthwhile. Rain here is short and heavy, so a clear gutter before the first storm matters most.
Do you check the roof during a gutter cleaning?
We look at the roof edge, flashing and shingles or tile we can see from the ladder, and note anything odd such as lifted pieces or heavy granule loss. It is a look, not a full inspection. If we see something worth following up, we say so and you decide whether to book a proper roof inspection.
What happens if I never clean my gutters?
Debris holds water against the fascia and roof edge, so wood rots, metal corrodes and seams leak. Overflow then streaks the stucco and soaks the soil by the foundation. Seedlings can root in the trough. A clogged run is also heavy enough to pull hangers loose, turning a cleaning job into a repair.
Can you clean gutters under a tile roof?
Yes, with care. Tile can crack under a foot or a ladder leaned on it, so we work from the gutter edge and avoid stepping on tile. Debris that has slipped behind the first row of tile is harder to reach. We tell you what we can reach safely and what would need tile lifted.
What does a gutter flush do that scooping does not?
Scooping removes the bulk. A flush with water then carries away what is left, shows whether the run drains and reveals leaks at seams. If water pools instead of running to the outlet, the run has lost its fall. That finding saves you from blaming leaves for a pitch problem.
Should gutters be cleaned before or after power washing a roof?
Gutters first, if the roof is being washed. Washing sends moss, grit and debris into the troughs, so the gutters are cleaned afterward as well. One customer describes a thorough roof cleaning that included gutter work and washing the surrounding areas. We can talk through the sequence for your home.
Areas served for gutter cleaning
- Monterey Park, CAHillside streets with 1950s-60s ranch homes on sloped lots mean downspouts discharge toward the lot below, so where the water lands matters.
- East Pasadena, CAMid-century homes under mature trees drop leaves and seed pods into gutters, which makes a pre-rain cleaning the main job.
- Santa Monica, CAMarine air corrodes metal near the bay, so cleaning visits also look for rust at seams, hangers and outlets.
- East Los Angeles, CAOlder small-lot homes in an unincorporated community leave little room beside the house, so ladder placement and bag-out are planned first.
- Walnut Park, CACompact lots beside Huntington Park mean tight side yards, and we plan where the ladder stands and debris goes.
- Maywood, CATightly packed older homes on a very small city footprint often share narrow gaps, so downspout discharge needs a check.
- La Cañada Flintridge, CAMountains rise directly above the city, so dry leaf and brush debris in gutters is a fire-season concern.
- Culver City, CABungalows from the 1920s to 1940s have older gutter styles that often need hand cleaning rather than a quick scoop.
- Santa Paula, CAA Santa Clara River Valley citrus city well outside the Valley, so we schedule cleaning visits with the longer drive in mind.
- Ontario, CAAn Inland Empire city far from Van Nuys, with older neighborhoods beside large warehouse districts and dusty dry-season debris.
