If you are picking a covering for a home in Los Angeles, start with the roofing materials overview, then come back here for shingle detail. Asphalt shingle is the familiar composition roof on most postwar neighborhoods, and it is still the covering most owners compare everything else against.

It is not the right call for every house. Tile suits some, metal others, and a handful of hillside addresses need a particular fire-rated assembly. Our guides to tile roofing and metal roofing cover those.

What is the difference between architectural and 3-tab shingles?

Three-tab shingles are flat, thin and cut in uniform tabs. Architectural shingles, also called laminate or dimensional shingles, bond layers together for a thicker, shadowed look. They hold up better in wind and tend to outlast 3-tab.

3-tab Architectural (laminate)
Thickness Single layer Layered
Look Flat, uniform Shadowed, varied
Wind and sun Weaker Stronger
Typical use Short-term holds, outbuildings Most home re-roofs
Price Lower Moderate step up

For a house you plan to keep, architectural is the usual call. Our post comparing tile and shingle in Southern California helps if you are weighing a switch.

What goes into a shingle roof replacement in Los Angeles?

The shingle is the visible part. A good shingle roof replacement is built from layers, each doing one job:

  • Deck: the plywood or boards the roof rests on, repaired where soft or stained
  • Underlayment: the water barrier over the deck, felt or synthetic
  • Drip edge and flashing: metal that sheds water at eaves, walls, chimneys and valleys
  • Starter and field shingles: the courses that cover everything
  • Ridge cap and vents: the peak covering and the exhaust for attic heat

Reviewers mention what gets found on opening a roof up. One customer describes hidden problems turned up by the crew: a poorly placed roof vent, fascia damage and a need for bird blocking. That is why we price a tear-off with the deck in mind. Our roof tear-off page explains the removal step.

How do you tell an asphalt shingle roof is worn out?

Shingles fail from the surface down. The granules on top block ultraviolet light, and once they wash off, the asphalt underneath dries, cracks and curls. Check these signs from the ground and the attic:

  • Granules in the gutters or at downspouts: a heavy dark layer means the surface is shedding
  • Curling, cupping or cracked tabs: common on south and west slopes after years of Valley sun
  • Bald patches or exposed mat: the fiberglass is showing through
  • Lifted or missing tabs after Santa Ana winds: sealing strips have let go
  • Daylight or stains at the attic deck: water or air is getting past the covering

Dark streaks are usually algae. They look bad but do not damage the shingle. Shingles are also sold in wind classes under ASTM D7158, so ask which class your quote carries, and note that nailing pattern matters as much as the label.

How a shingle roof goes on, step by step

  1. Measure and photograph. We record pitch, size, layers and condition before quoting.
  2. Strip to the deck. Old shingles and underlayment come off and the deck is inspected.
  3. Repair the deck. Soft or stained boards are replaced, with photos shown before we continue.
  4. Dry in. Underlayment, drip edge and valley flashing go down first.
  5. Shingle the field. Starter course, then courses up to the ridge, nailed to the manufacturer's pattern.
  6. Finish and clean. Ridge cap and vents go on, then nails are swept and rolled up with a magnetic roller.

One Van Nuys customer describes seeing a magnetic roller used a second time to check the ground for missed nails. Another describes drone photos sent while work was under way.

Cool rated shingles and the Los Angeles rules

A shingle replacement that passes the half-roof mark in Los Angeles needs a product listed with the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) as cool-rated. What counts depends on roof slope and your property's climate zone, and city rules sit on top of the state Energy Code. Find your zone on the California Energy Commission's climate zone lookup.

Many cool rated shingles are available in tan, grey and brown, so a cool roof does not have to be white. Our cool roofing page covers the rules, and LADWP residential customers may qualify for a rebate if funding is available. The City of Los Angeles also generally requires a permit for a re-roof. Rules differ in each city, so confirm with your building department.

What affects asphalt roof cost?

Angi's Los Angeles figures for any full replacement run about $4 to $12 per square foot, centered near $8.60 (accessed November 2026). Asphalt shingle usually sits toward the lower end of the material choices, but your price will move with:

  • Roof area, steepness, and how many valleys, hips and dormers it has
  • Number of layers to remove, and deck condition
  • Shingle grade and underlayment type
  • Skylights, chimneys and vents that need new flashing
  • Access, steep slopes and haul-away

We price after seeing the roof and put the number in writing. For a bigger picture of lifespan, see our post on how long a roof lasts in Los Angeles.

Can I switch from tile to asphalt shingle?

Often, yes, though it is a bigger job than a swap. The tile comes off, the old underlayment is checked or replaced, and the deck is inspected and sometimes re-nailed. One customer in Van Nuys had an old tile roof changed to asphalt shingle. Our tile to shingle conversion page walks through that process.

Asphalt Shingle Roofing: common questions

How long do asphalt shingles last in Los Angeles sun?

Often around 15 to 25 years here, depending on the grade, color, attic ventilation and exposure, though the manufacturer's rated life governs. Strong sun and dry heat age shingles faster on south and west slopes, and the Valley's long hot season runs hard on them. Cracked granules and curling edges tell us where a roof stands.

Are architectural shingles worth it over 3-tab?

Usually, yes. Architectural shingles are thicker, laminated in layers, and stand up better to Santa Ana winds and sun than flat 3-tab. The extra cost is a modest slice of a full re-roof because tear-off, labor and underlayment cost the same either way. On a short-term hold, 3-tab can still make sense.

Do shingles meet cool roof rules here?

They can, if the product you pick is CRRC-rated for your slope and location. Once a Los Angeles replacement passes the half-roof mark, the product has to be cool-rated, and many shingles are listed. Check the product's CRRC listing, not the color alone. We confirm the rating against your address when we write the estimate.

Can a new asphalt shingle roof go over my old one?

Only in limited cases. The state residential code bars a third layer, and it bars re-covering roofing that is soaked or deteriorated. Even where one overlay is permitted, we favor a tear-off so the deck can be inspected and repaired. Ask any shingle quote whether it includes tear-off and deck repair.

Does asphalt shingle roofing in Los Angeles need a permit?

Generally yes. In the City of Los Angeles a re-roof is permitted through LADBS, by building permit, or by certificate of compliance where the home qualifies. Other cities have their own departments, so ask yours. Name the permit holder in the contract. One Van Nuys customer says we handled that paperwork for them.

What is a shingle roof system, and why does the bundle price not tell the story?

A shingle roof system is the shingles plus underlayment, starter strip, flashing, drip edge, ridge cap and ventilation. Two quotes can name the same shingle and differ in everything that sits beneath it. Compare line items, not just the shingle name, and ask what happens if the deck needs repair.
