The ridge cap is the row of shingles or tiles that covers the peak where two slopes meet, and hip caps do the same job along the sloping corners. When one comes loose, wind gets under it and water gets past it. That is why ridge work earns a place near the top of any roof repair in Los Angeles list.
Caught early, the job is small. A handful of caps reseated or replaced takes part of a day. Left alone, a loose run can peel back along the ridge in a single windy night.
Why ridge and hip caps wear out before the rest of the roof
The ridge has no shelter. It takes the full push of every gust, the hardest sun, and the most flexing as the roof heats and cools. On a shingle roof, the cap pieces are bent over the peak and held by a few nails and a sealant strip. On a tile roof, the caps are heavy pieces set in mortar or fastened to a ridge board.
Heat does the slow damage. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals count about 77 days a year at 90°F or hotter in Van Nuys, against about 5 at LAX, so a Valley ridge bakes harder than a coastal one. Santa Ana winds do the fast damage, finding the one cap whose sealant gave up in August.
Signs of a loose or cracked ridge cap
Most of these show from the ground or from a quick look in the attic:
- A wavy or broken line when you sight along the ridge from the street
- Cap pieces in the yard or gutters after a windy night
- Dark gaps or exposed nail heads along the peak or a hip
- Cracked, tilted or shifted ridge tiles, with mortar crumbs on the tiles below
- A thin line of daylight at the top of the attic, or a stain on a top-floor ceiling along the ridge line

Ridge cap repair by roof type
The repair follows the material. A shingle ridge and a clay ridge fail in different ways.
| Roof | What usually fails | Typical repair |
|---|---|---|
| Asphalt shingle | Sealant strip lets go, caps curl or tear off | Replace the damaged caps, re-nail and seal the rest |
| Clay or concrete tile | Mortar cracks, tiles shift or slide | Lift, clean, rebed and reset, or replace broken tiles |
| Tile on a ridge board | Fasteners back out, adhesive fails | Refasten or replace the pieces, check the board |
| Metal | Fasteners loosen, closures gap | Refasten, reseal and replace worn closure strips |
| Ridge vent | Cracked body, open end plugs | Replace the vent section and caps above it |

What does ridge cap repair include?
- Reseat or replace: loose, cracked or missing caps on ridges and hips
- Refasten and seal: new fasteners and sealant on shingle and metal caps
- Rebed tile: old mortar cleaned out and ridge tile set in fresh bedding
- Peak check: underlayment and ridge board looked at before anything is covered
When ridge tile repointing is enough, and when the ridge needs rebuilding
Repointing means renewing the mortar joints and bedding that hold ridge tiles in place. It works when the tiles are sound and the old bedding is only cracked at the edges. It buys several seasons on a roof that is otherwise healthy.
Once the mortar is loose all along the ridge, or the tiles crack when lifted, patching stops paying for itself. At that point we lift the whole run, check the underlayment beneath it and set the tiles again. If the roof as a whole is near the end of its life, we say so and show you what the replacement conversation looks like.
How a ridge cap repair visit works
- Look from the ground. You point out what you have seen, and we sight along the ridge and hips.
- Check the attic. Daylight at the apex or stains on the framing tell us how far the damage reaches.
- Go up with the right safety gear. Tile cracks underfoot, so we plan where to step, and we photograph what we find.
- Choose the repair. Reseat, replace, repoint or rebuild. You get the choice explained and a written price.
- Make the repair. New caps go on with the right fasteners, and tile is set in fresh bedding with the underlayment at the peak checked.
- Clean up and photograph the result. We pick up loose pieces and fasteners and show you the finished ridge.

Ridge repair in mapped fire zones
If your roof is in a mapped fire zone, new caps must fit the roof's required fire rating. The state updated its fire hazard maps in 2025, so check your address on CAL FIRE's viewer instead of relying on an old answer. For a full covering change, see our page on Class A fire-rated roofing.
Gaps at a ridge are also an easy way in for birds and rodents, which we cover on the animal damage roof repair page.
What affects the price of ridge cap repair?
Length of ridge is the first factor, and the number of hips comes next. Tile costs more to work than shingle because tiles are heavy, break underfoot and have to be set by hand. Steep pitch and a two-story height slow the work. Matching an older clay profile can add time.
The condition under the cap matters too. Soft decking or worn underlayment at the peak turns a cap job into a small structural roof repair. We price after we see the ridge, and the price comes in writing before work starts. Our guide to Santa Ana wind roof damage explains what to photograph after a wind event.

Do ridge cap repairs need a permit or an insurance claim?
A small repair generally does not change what is on your roof, but rules depend on the address. Ask the City of Los Angeles building department (LADBS) or your own city or county agency before you assume anything. A full re-ridge as part of a bigger job can fall under re-roof rules.
Wind damage may be covered by a homeowners policy, while old caps worn out by age usually are not. Photograph the damage and the date. We can inspect, document what we find and write a repair estimate that you can hand to your insurer. We do not deal with the insurer for you; only you or a licensed public adjuster does that.
Why Clear Shield for ridge cap repair in Los Angeles
Reviewers in Van Nuys describe an approach built on looking before quoting. One customer says pictures and measurements came before the estimate, and another says drone photos came during the work, since not everyone wants to climb up and check.
What Van Nuys customers say about roof repairs
“They also performed a full water test afterward to make sure the leak was fully resolved, and everything stayed dry.”
“The crew’s workmanship looked top-notch, and they kept me updated by sending drone photos of the roof work as it happened, which was really helpful since I wasn’t about to climb up there myself!”
“During the new roof installation, a small leak showed up after some seasonal rain, and Frederick and the crew responded right away, even on a Sunday morning, to fix it fast.”

Ridge caps are rarely the only worn part on a roof that has them. Worn roof flashing or a weathered fascia and soffit edge is worth checking on the same visit. We also cover Culver City, Inglewood, Hidden Hills, where HOA design review may shape a tile choice, and La Cañada Flintridge, where the mountains above the city burned in the 2009 Station Fire and the fire zone check matters more.

Ridge Cap Repair: common questions
What happens if a ridge cap comes loose?
Wind can lift the next cap, then the next, until a run of the ridge is open. Rain then reaches the underlayment and the top of the attic framing. On tile roofs a loose ridge tile can also slide. Stop using the area under it and call early, because a few caps are cheap to reseat and a stripped ridge is not.
Can tile ridge caps be reset?
Usually, if the tiles themselves are whole. We lift the loose tiles, clean out the old mortar or bedding, check the underlayment at the peak, and set them again in fresh material. Cracked or chipped ridge tiles are replaced, and matching an older clay profile can take time, so we tell you what we can match before the work starts.
Why do ridge caps fail first in Santa Ana winds?
The ridge is the highest, most exposed line on the house, and gusts do not slow down before they cross it. Heat has already dried the sealant strips on shingle caps and cracked old mortar on tile ones. Wind then gets under the edge of a weak cap and peels it back toward the next slope.
Is a ridge vent repaired the same way as a ridge cap?
Not quite. A ridge vent sits over an open slot in the roof, so the repair covers the vent body, its end plugs and the caps over it. We check that the slot stays clear and that nothing lets rain blow in. A cracked vent section is usually replaced rather than patched on a ridge cap repair visit.
Do I need to replace the whole ridge if only one cap is damaged on my Los Angeles roof?
Usually not. If the surrounding caps are sound and still lie flat, one or a few can be replaced. Caps that are brittle all along the ridge, or that crack when lifted, tell a different story. We check how the neighbors behave before we quote, and we price the short repair and the full run together when it matters.
How long does a ridge cap repair take?
Most ridge repairs on a single house take part of a day once the caps and materials are on hand. A long tile ridge that needs fresh bedding all along it can take longer, and wet weather can push the date. We give you a realistic window when we have looked at the roof and the access.
